When Theories Are Tested Through Experiments: Students at SMA Negeri 3 Yogyakarta Investigate the Concept of Friction

Yogyakarta, September 10, 2026 — XI students at SMA Negeri 3 Yogyakarta explored the concept of friction through a laboratory activity as part of their course on the dynamics of motion. The activity was designed and conducted by Anastasya Damayanti, a physics education major who is currently completing her teaching practicum at SMA Negeri 3 Yogyakarta.
The lab session is conducted after students have learned the theory of motion dynamics in class. This activity provides students with an opportunity to directly observe the application of the concept of friction, which they had previously studied in theory.
Before the lab session began, a brief explanation was provided regarding the objectives and the sequence of activities. The students then worked in groups to conduct the experiments and collect data, with guidance provided throughout the process.
The students’ enthusiasm was evident from the preparation stage. They actively worked together to set up the experiments and ensure the activities were carried out according to the instructions. This active participation continued as the students began taking measurements, recording results, and discussing them with their group members.

Through this activity, students observed static and kinetic friction on various types of surfaces. They then analyzed the experimental data to determine the coefficient of friction and compared their results with the theory they had previously studied.
In general, the results of the students’ data analysis show trends consistent with the theory. These results provide students with an opportunity to see the connection between the concepts they learned in class and the data obtained through experiments. The analysis process also guides students to not only obtain calculation results but also to understand the meaning of the data generated from the experiments.
This activity also provided education practicum students with hands-on experience in applying teaching methods directly in a school setting. The students’ role was not limited to presenting the material; they also designed activities that allowed students to participate directly in the process of observation and data collection.
For students, lab activities provide a learning experience that encourages them to observe, experiment, measure, collaborate, and analyze experimental results. This type of learning gives students the opportunity to understand that physics is not just about formulas, but also about the process of obtaining and interpreting evidence through experiments.
This learning activity is also related to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 4: Quality Education. The hands-on learning experience through the lab activity provides students with the opportunity to engage directly in the learning process and develop skills in observation, measurement, collaboration, and analysis.
Thus, the friction experiment is not only part of the instruction on the dynamics of motion but also provides a physics learning experience that directly involves students in the experimental process.
